Joan Sommers, a member of Artist Studios at Fearrington Village, will be showing her work at the Chapel Hill FESTIFALL on Sunday, October 2, at Booth B 28 from Noon to 6 PM. She will have for viewing and purchase 40 items in three categories: 15 Calligraphic pieces, 21 Paintings on Paper mostly in oriental style and 4 framed paintings.
“My contemporary works in oil, acrylic and sumi-e are inspired by the surroundings and events in the countries where I have lived,” says Sommers. “ In my painting, I try to provoke the eye and move the spirit.”
While living in southeast Asia in the sixties, Sommers explored Chinese calligraphy, painting and Asian history. Returning to the US she studied with Diana Kan in NYC, and became a member of the Sumi-e Society before returning to China to study Landscape painting at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou. Joan’s earlier studies were at the Art institute of Chicago and the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston.
Ms. Sommers enhanced her understanding of Asian art and culture through studies in Buddhism and the works of Thai, Philippine and Indonesian artists.
She has exhibited in Europe, Asia and the United States and directed workshops on Chinese and Japanese painting techniques in many countries. She is a member of the Sumi-e Society of America and the Chatham County Artists Guild. Her works are included in collections across the United States, Europe and Asia.
