Cuba 50 Years Under the Revolution

Fearrington Artist, Pac McLaurin likes pictures, stories, and pictures that tell stories. “I think any decent photograph tells us at least a fragment of a story. I am especially interested in the concept of place and a sense of place.”  On his website, Pac tells of his interest in “the history of photography, really history in general as reflected in photography.”

His upcoming exhibit, Cuba 50 Years Under the Revolution is story telling at its best, an intermix of time and place. History revealed through a fascinating display of black and white diptychs comparing 1963 Cuba with more recent work - photos by Tito Alvarez 1962 and Pac McLaurin 2012.

The opening reception is Friday, August 21, 2015 from 6-9pm at Through This Lens in Durham. The show runs through September 13, 2015. Dr. McLaurin will speak about his work at 2pm on the closing date of Sunday, September 13th.

Through This Lens is located at 303 E. Chapel Hill Street, Durham, NC 27701. Phone: 919-687.0250. Website:

Fearrington artist, Jan Harrison’s work included in the Triangle Weavers Guild Show

“The best way to experience fiber arts in the Triangle area of North Carolina is through the Triangle Weavers Guild.” This quote from the Triangle Weavers Guild’s website perfectly describes their latest exhibit now on display at the North Carolina Crafts Gallery in Carrboro through May 31, 2015. The show features woven blankets, scarves, towels, wall art, wearable art and jewelry.

Fearrington artist and weaver, Jan Harrison invites you to explore the show, stop by Friday, May 8th from 6:00pm  9:00pm for the reception, view her basket and let her know what you think.

Jan is no newcomer to the world of fiber art.  She has worked with fiber of various sorts for almost 50 years.  She started out as a knitter and moved on to weaving.  She weaves both on a floor loom and makes baskets. “Working with yarn is so satisfying. Choosing colors….finding textures…..fashioning a design…seeing it emerge on the loom, that is exciting. ”

Jan’s style has evolved from early rugs to wall hangings.  Tapestry is now her favorite style.   “ Working on a loom is frustrating in that it is so linear, so horizontal.  The weft goes back and forth in a straight line.  With tapestry techniques you can weave curves, circles and angles.  I really like using amorphous forms in a  design.”

Basket weaving frees you from the structure imposed with a loom.  The materials aren’t as flexible but the same tapestry techniques apply here as well.  The same low intensity colors are used in both.  Soft colors and heavy texture are found in many of Jan’s pieces.

The North Carolina Crafts Gallery is located at 212 W Main St Carrboro, NC. The Triangle Weavers Guild Show is in the Back Gallery.

The First Annual Artist Studios at Fearrington Village Open studio Tour was a huge success!

The  First Annual Artist Studios at Fearrington Village Open studio Tour was a huge success!
For the tour goer, it provided a free art-lovers outing, a chance to discover the wonders of Fearrington Village, a welcome into the artists’ studios, a glimpse at their creative process and a close-up view of works on display and in progress.

For the artists,  pooling their resources, talents and time strengthened the artists’ sense of community and  supported  their common goals. It provides a way of getting their art seen and an opportunity to sell works directly out of their studios.
Planning began a year ago.  Some of the artists had never participated in a tour. A workshop was held.  Art was professionally photographed and a full color brochure with map indicating each studio designed. 5000 brochures were printed and distributed throughout Chatham county and to art friendly businesses and organizations in Raleigh, Durham, Apex, Cary, Chapel Hill and Hillsborough. Press releases, newspaper articles, social media– blogs and Facebook, calendar listings, two media preview tours, posters, postcards and  e-invites  promoted the tour.  Banners announced the event and directional signs guided the tour goers.  The artists’ work was showcased at The Gathering Place in Fearrington Village  and exhibited during a well-attended, wonderfully elegant preview reception at Galloway Ridge at Fearrington.

The artists worked for months in preparation.  The anticipation and excitement mounted.  Studios were organized and new work created.

The result was a resounding success! Visitors came, not just local residents but from other counties.  And they were not disappointed. They discovered beautifully crafted art in a wide variety. Something for everyone.  Contemporary and traditional, whimsy and sublime.   If they were surprised by the artists’ professionalism, it was not evident nor expressed. They came with their checkbooks, cash and bankcards and purchased art!
