Joan Sommers exhibits at MH Art Gallery



"Across Generations: Modernism in 20th and 21st Century Southeast Asian Art."

The MH Art Gallery exhibit features over twenty works by recognized post-World War II masters like the Philippine’s Hernando Ruiz Ocampo,Thailand’s Chalood Nimsamer and Indonesia’s Mochtar Apin as well as younger artists like Mochtar Apin protégé Yoes Rizal and printmakers KitikongTilokwattanotal and Amarin Kantawong from the art collective Chengmai Art on Paper (C.A.P.) who continue the innovative spirit of printmaking begun by Chalood Nimsamer. Also featured in this exhibit are selected works by American artist Joan Sommers. A graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, she embraced the ideas of her contemporaries in each of the distinct cultures she lived and came to know many of these artists personally. While residing in the Philippines, Ocampo invited her to join his legendary Saturday Afternoon Painting Group (Taza do Oro Group) where she became a regular. Many of the works exhibited are from Sommers and her husband’s personal collection.Curated by Daria Sommers and Nicholas Rosal.
