Fearrington artists enjoy one another's work

Several members of Artist Studios at Fearrington Village toured the studios of five fellow artists to get new insights on the creative process. The Studio Tour was organized by Roni Liberman, the groups  Salon Chair.

Ceramic artist John Makowski recalled his rich background in portraying concepts of ancient cultures in clay and mixed media wall hangings. He demonstrated his unique technique of applying dry pigments to low fire clay to produce vibrant and expressive art works.

Stephen Bodner showed the group several examples of exquisite wood furniture, based on classic designs. He displayed his state of the art wood working studio, and explained the complex steps in transforming pieces of wood into fine furniture.

Reynold Maher talked about his life as a set designer in New York City. He displayed several examples of his abstract expressionist acrylic paintings.

Vietta Maher explained her love of nature, and enjoyment of roaming around the rural Fearrington environment collecting natural "art supplies". Her studio space is a fairy land of found object assemblages.

Carol Owen reviewed her many years of creative life in Fearrington Village. She showed her nature-inspired paintings and unique mixed media "spirit houses".

Fearrington's Joan Sommers to exhibit at Festifall

Joan Sommers, a member of Artist Studios at Fearrington Village, will be showing her work at the Chapel Hill FESTIFALL on Sunday, October 2, at Booth B 28 from Noon to 6 PM.  She will have for viewing and purchase 40 items in three categories: 15 Calligraphic pieces,  21 Paintings on Paper mostly in oriental style and 4 framed paintings.

“My contemporary works in oil, acrylic and sumi-e are inspired by the surroundings and events in the countries where I have lived,” says Sommers. “ In my painting, I try to provoke the eye and move the spirit.”

While living in southeast Asia in the sixties, Sommers explored Chinese calligraphy, painting and Asian history.  Returning to the US she studied with Diana Kan in NYC, and became a member of the Sumi-e Society before returning to China to study Landscape painting at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou.  Joan’s earlier studies were at the Art institute of Chicago and the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston.

Ms. Sommers enhanced her understanding of Asian art and culture through studies in Buddhism and the works of Thai, Philippine and Indonesian artists.

She has exhibited in Europe, Asia and the United States and directed workshops on Chinese and Japanese painting techniques in many countries.  She is a member of the Sumi-e Society of America and the Chatham County Artists Guild.  Her works are included in collections across the United States, Europe and Asia.

Fearrington Artist Murry Handler's Whimsy in Black & Grey Purchased for Corporate Headquarters

A four panel painting from the Whimsy Series has been purchased by a biotech company for its new corporate headquarters in Durham. The tetraptych is from a series of multi-canvas abstract paintings, executed in black and white acrylics on linen.

Each of the paintings in this series plays with the viewer’s perception, hence the name "Whimsy in Black & Gray", making wry comments on visual cues by showing off-kilter, canvas on canvas, askew or trompe l’oeil effects.
